About the Art

It can take sometime to understand what you are creating.

In the beginning: I was captivated by the eclectic composition and juxtaposition of the work. Bringing together disparate and different fragments was bold and daring. I was setting my own rules, creating my own language.

Oh, the irony: As I created more and more panels, I began to see the irony in my work. By making art from advertising, I was actually rejecting it. Every advertising campaign is crafted with intent, strategy, and direction. In contrast, my art emerges from randomness. From the posters I find and the way the paper rips when torn down, to the tossed fragments on the studio floor that suggest a composition, randomness pervades my art.

A new hope: I've begun to sense a new, potent power in my work: hope and optimism. Collage, at its core, merges diverse expressions to create something fresh and innovative. Imagine if we all could embrace this concept? Consider if those who weaponize and reject our differences were to adopt the process of collage. They would recognize the potential to craft compelling new narratives from our diversity.

My Story

It all starts in the East End.

My childhood was colored by adventures in the railyards and docklands of Toronto on my banana-seat bicycle. Those expeditions, passing by massive logos on boxcars, discarded waybills, signage, and the weathered hulls of lakers, set a direction for creative my life.

As my creativity led me to a career in design and advertising, I always felt a connection back to those early adventures. The power of a sans-serif typeface was influenced by the logos on the boxcars. My innate attraction to the worn and torn grew with every stoop to pick up trackside fragments of paper.

Today, I live in Ottawa but can often be found in Montreal and Toronto. Reflecting on it, the process remains the same as those days on the banana-seat. I am still exploring among letterforms and pieces of paper.
